FAQ

Why should we hire a birth photographer?

Good question. Having me at your birth will allow your husband or other friends and family members to spend their time supporting you during this momentous occasion, instead of worrying about trying to capture all of the very important shots of the day. They will be able to enjoy the experience and participate much more if they are not just watching it unfold from behind the viewfinder of your camera.

How much does this cost?

Please contact me for complete pricing information.

What exactly do we get out of this?

You will receive a complete set of 4×6 prints, as well as a DVD slideshow set to music. If you would like, this slideshow can also be placed online privately so that friends and family can also enjoy it.

*As of July ‘09 I have also decided to start offering a set of 30 low resolution, watermarked digital images for use on Facebook, MySpace, blogs…

When will we get our pictures back?

I will normally have your slideshow completed within 1-2 weeks after your delivery, but it takes several more days before you will receive your prints. Hopefully they will be worth the wait! :-)

When do you come to the birth and how long do you stay afterwards?

I come to your chosen place of birth during active labor and stay until about 3 hours afterward. I love photographing the 1st moments, the herbal bath if you are birthing at home, your new baby meeting the adoring family and the excitement of the newborn exam.

Is there anything we can do to make things easier on you?

The only 2 things I can think of would be to give me as much advance notice as possible when you think that labor might be starting. I know that is not always possible, but when it is I always greatly appreciate it! The other really only applies to homebirths and that is to please not use bright white towels for after the birth! I know that white is popular because it can be bleached, but I have to be honest and tell you that when you use darker colored towels the pictures look better (and they are easier to photograph!)

Have you ever photographed a cesarean birth?

Yes, I have at several area hospitals and I absolutely love doing this! After having a cesarean with my 1st child and seeing that there was a major lack of participation and involvement with me I now know how special it can be to have these photographs showing what might otherwise have been missed out on!

When is it best to book our birth photography “session”?

Since I only attend a certain number of births per month it is best to reserve your spot as soon as you know you would like me to be there. I am often fully booked at least 5 months in advance, however, that might not always be the case, so if you are interested in having me at your birth and it is coming up soon please contact me as soon as possible because I may still have an opening!

How many births do you photograph per month?

I limit myself to four, that’s why it is so important to reserve your spot as soon as possible!

Do you offer gift certificates?

Yes, I do. Contact me to get information on purchasing one.

Do you have any type of referral rewards program?

Yes, I do.  As of July ‘09 any previous client who offers a referral resulting  in a booked birth photography session will  receive a beautiful 8×10 print or 2 5×7 prints of their favorite image(s) from their birth.  I greatly appreciate my clients and all the referrals that have already been sent my way!

Do you offer childrens portraiture, as well as birth photography?

Not at this time.

Are there any days that you are NOT on call?

I am NOT on call on my childrens birthdays.  These dates are February 3, March 11, September 29 and November 7.   I am also not on call Christmas Eve or Christmas morning.

What happens if my birth goes fast and you miss it?

TYPICALLY if I am called at the correct time and am given a reasonable amount of time to arrive at your place of birth I will not miss your birth.  HOWEVER, sometimes precipitous labors do happen and I won’t arrive until after the baby does.  You have 2 options in this case:  I can still photograph all of postpartum as I normally would and you will still owe the full amount OR you can just text or call me and have me turn around and go home. You won’t owe anything further and I will refund your deposit.  If, however,  there is a situation where the labor is fairly normal but for whatever reason I am not called until pushing or close to it, I will not turn my families life upside down to frantically race to your birth.  I *REQUIRE* a reasonable amount of time to arrange childcare for my 4 children and make the drive into town to the hospital, birth center or your home.  If I am going to miss your birth by a wide margin because of your failure to contact me I will not come.   It is not worth it for you to pay my full fee and only get half of what you should be getting.   I will return the deposit to you and you can put it towards a newborn photography session.

How did you get started?

Thanks so much for asking, I love telling this story! :-) When I became pregnant with my 2nd child I decided to plan for a VBAC after having a cesarean with my 1st. I learned so much throughout that pregnancy and became completely fascinated with childbirth. After having the VBAC and then going on to have a home waterbirth with my 3rd I was doing childrens portraiture when offered the opportunity to photograph a birth. Of course I jumped at the chance and had a terrible time waiting for moms due date - 6 long months away! When the big day came I rushed to the hospital and watched Cedar Grace come into the world. After two sons her parents had been praying for a daughter and they got one! It was an incredible experience and when I got back home later that day I told my husband that I would love to be able to do that again. We both thought it would never happen, but the very next month I very eagerly rushed to a different hospital to watch Nathan be born! Since then I have photographed over 60 births and they have all been so different - I have been to most area hospitals and most area birth centers! I have seen twin deliveries at home, breech deliveries at home, VBACs in every setting, cesareans and even an amazing unassisted homebirth. I love my job and can’t wait to see what the future brings!

Do you have any sample slideshows to view before we make a decision?

Please contact me for several client slideshows that I have permission to share.
